Insurance charity event nears; preparations intensify

The Insurance Charity, a well-known organisation providing financial and practical guidance to those facing challenging circumstances within the insurance community, has announced a week-long initiative starting from June 24th. The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness about the support available and encourage more people to seek help when needed.

The Chairman of the Insurance Charity, Josh Brekenfeld, emphasised the importance of the campaign, stating that it is crucial for the Charity not to remain the industry's best-kept secret and for more insurance people to be reached. Resources for taking part in the campaign can be downloaded from the Charity's campaign page, which can be found at www.theinsurancecharity.org.uk.

The Insurance Charity does not require payment to partner with employers or for individuals to sign up for support. People needing financial or practical support can visit the same website for more information. The Charity encourages people to highlight the organisation to their insurance contacts, particularly those with HR, wellbeing, and line management responsibility.

In addition to the Insurance Charity, other charities in the insurance sector are innovating to support the industry and communities. For instance, The Charity Hub (TCH) recently partnered with EcoClaim to promote sustainability in claims management. This partnership provides insurers with responsible business solutions that benefit the planet and communities by turning excess inventory into charitable impact and leveraging technology to reduce carbon emissions in insurance claims processing.

The insurance sector has also shown its commitment to supporting social causes. Lemonade, an insurtech firm, donated over $2.1 million to 45 charities globally through its Giveback program in 2025, demonstrating how the insurance sector can integrate giving into their business model to support various causes.

Despite these efforts, research by the Charity Commission shows that only 47% of individuals donated to charity in 2023. This downward trend in charitable donations, coupled with increased demand, poses evolving risks for insurers, according to Ansvar. The Insurance Charity's CEO, Helen Sanson, emphasised that people don't need to be in crisis to reach out for help and that the Charity can complement the support already provided by employers.

In the last financial year, the Charity awarded over £1.3 million (approximately €1.6 million) to current and former insurance people struggling financially across the UK and Ireland. The Charity's recent evolution includes allowing applications for support irrespective of the length of service and a new visual identity and name change to reach more people within the industry.

The Insurance Charity's ongoing work supports charitable projects and builds a culture of giving within the insurance sector. The organisation continues to foster philanthropy within the industry by launching new chapters and divisions like IICF Canada and Tampa Bay, with statewide philanthropic goals to strengthen community support across regions. They emphasise leadership, belonging, and sustainability in their events and programs, such as the June 2025 gatherings in New York City focusing on these topics.

As the insurance industry continues to grow and evolve, it's reassuring to see organisations like the Insurance Charity and IICF dedicating their resources to supporting the industry's workforce and giving back to the community. The Insurance Charity's upcoming awareness-raising campaign on June 24th is a testament to their commitment to reaching more people and providing the help they need.
