The Chinese automaker BYD has launched a new addition to its Yuan series, the BYD Yuan UP, a subcompact electric SUV aimed at younger, urban buyers. This model offers two main battery options, a front electric motor, and a range of up to 401 km under CLTC or equivalent cycles.
Key Features and Specifications
Motor and Performance
The BYD Yuan UP is powered by a front permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering up to 130 kW (174 hp) on its top trims, with torque reaching up to 290 Nm. The entry-level version, on the other hand, features a 70 kW (94 hp) motor and 180 Nm torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.9 seconds, with a top speed limited to about 160 km/h.
Battery and Range
The BYD Yuan UP comes equipped with a 45.1 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery, providing a cruising range of around 401 km on mainstream trims. A new entry-level trim uses a 32 kWh battery, offering a range of approximately 301 km. Fast DC charging is supported, taking 30 minutes to replenish from 30% to 80%.
Dimensions
Measuring 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, the BYD Yuan UP is smaller than the Yuan PLUS and is targeted towards the A0 segment. It has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm.
Interior and Infotainment
The BYD Yuan UP boasts a modern interior with a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen (capable of switching between landscape and portrait modes), an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and the BYD DiLink intelligent network system. Other features include voice control, wireless charging, a crystal gear selector, perforated leatherette seats, automatic climate control with rear vents, panoramic view cameras, and front dual airbags.
Driver Assistance and Safety
The BYD Yuan UP is equipped with the BYD DiPilot L2+ system on its higher trims, offering advanced driving assistance functionalities such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and smart parking assistance. These features are supported by 12 cameras, multiple radars, and ultrasonic sensors for enhanced situational awareness. The entry-level Yuan UP 301km Pilot Edition lacks the more advanced "God’s Eye" system to keep costs down.
Comparison with Yuan PLUS and Yuan Pro
The BYD Yuan PLUS is a larger, more premium SUV with bigger batteries and possibly stronger motors, targeting a higher segment than the Yuan UP. The BYD Yuan Pro is often the export-name or a variant derived from the Yuan UP with localization changes, like the 51.1 kWh battery in Malaysia or a 51 kWh pack variant of the Atto 2 in Australia.
Additional Features
The BYD Yuan UP also features 'dragon eye' LED headlights, 'lucky ring' LED taillights, and a large panoramic sunroof. The rear row can be folded down, and both the driver and passenger seats are electrically adjustable, with the driver seat offering six-way adjustability and the passenger seat offering four-way adjustability.
The BYD Yuan UP adheres to BYD's Dynasty's Dragon Face design language, offering a distinctive appearance. Consumers can choose from three models and three exterior colours of the BYD Yuan UP. The price range for the Yuan UP in China is 74,800 – ~119,800 yuan (~$10,400-$16,700 USD).
- The BYD Yuan UP, with its focus on urban, younger buyers, is not limited to the automotive industry, as it also showcases advancements in technology with its modern interior features and BYD DiLink intelligent network system.
- In the realm of sustainable transportation, the finance sector plays a crucial role in the adoption of electric vehicles like the BYD Yuan UP, as the costs for entry-level trims and fast DC charging are competitive within the industry, making it an attractive choice for potential buyers.
