ISM Renames Economic Indicators as ISM® PMI® Reports
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) has revamped the naming of its monthly economic indicators, now known as ISM® PMI® Reports. The change, effective September 1, 2025, aligns with the central role of the Purchasing Managers' Index® (PMI®) in the reports.
ISM®, which has been tracking U.S. business conditions since 1931, uses a diffusion index methodology for its reports. This approach is robust and reliable, as it's based on responses from supply management professionals. The new naming convention reflects this core aspect, with individual reports now titled ISM® Manufacturing PMI® Report and ISM® Services PMI® Report.
The change will be visible across ISM channels starting with the next Manufacturing PMI® release on September 2, 2025. Media and data licensees are encouraged to update their style guides to reflect the new suite name, ISM® PMI® Reports. Despite the change, the methodology, survey instruments, and release schedules remain unchanged.
The updated naming of ISM's economic indicators to ISM® PMI® Reports is a reflection of the methodology's core strength and the PMI's central role. The change aims to provide a clearer and more accurate representation of the reports' focus and content.
