The city of Düsseldorf is set to welcome a new addition to its public transport system, with the construction of the U8 tram line scheduled to begin in January 2021. This ambitious project, which is expected to be completed by mid-2024, will bring significant changes to the urban landscape of the city.

The first segment of the U8 tram line will extend westwards beyond the arena, crossing the Rhine, and will connect to various cities such as Neuss, Meerbusch, and Krefeld. The core section will be a single-track operation in the area of Lilienthal Street, starting from September 2020, for the shell construction works.

A key feature of the U8 tram line is the bridge construction over the Nordstern, which will be built in a wide arc and supported on five pillars, crossing the intersection of Danziger Street and Autobahn A 44. The bridge, named Bridge Nordstern, will lead the route onto a bridge over the Nordstern.

A new line will branch off from this track, crossing the Nordstern towards the airport and ending at the airport terminal in an underground station. To the east, the tram line is planned to extend to the existing airport long-distance train station and further to Ratingen.

The first section of the route runs on existing tracks from the Freiligrathplatz towards the north. The construction will involve the use of open-cut methods for the ramp, tunnel structure, and subway station, while soil retaining walls and diaphragm walls will play a crucial role in securing the excavation site and providing waterproofing.

The project is expected to receive around 180 million euros net in funding from the current grant procedure, with a provisional total cost of around 256 million euros gross. For any questions regarding the construction works of U 8, residents can contact Heinz Schulze, a personal contact person, at telephone number 0211-89 93859 or via email at [email protected].

It's worth noting that while bridges are typically less expensive to construct and maintain than tunnels, residents often express concerns about noise, visual impact, and changes to the urban landscape. However, specific reasons for choosing a bridge over a tunnel for the U8 tram line construction in Düsseldorf have not been publicly disclosed. For a detailed explanation of the reasons behind this choice, it is recommended to consult Düsseldorf city planning resources or local media for authoritative insights.

Utility and sewer line works for the tram line began in October 2019 and are now essentially complete. The first major works at the airport terminals will begin in the third quarter of 2021. Despite a recent rejection of an urgent application by residents against the bridge construction over the Nordstern by the Higher Administrative Court, it is expected that the construction process will proceed smoothly.

The new U8 tram line, crossing the Nordstern towards the airport, will branch off from the core section and receive funding from the current grant procedure, amounting to approximately 180 million euros net. Furthermore, the bridge construction over the Nordstern, a key feature of the U8 tram line, is expected to lead the route onto a bridge over the Nordstern, connecting industries in Düsseldorf with the finance sector and facilitating transportation to airports and neighboring cities.
