Jaguar Land Rover Hit by Major Cyberattack; NCSC Warns UK
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been hit by a significant cybersecurity incident, leading to the shutdown of its Halewood plant and disruption of global operations. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has used the opportunity to reiterate its warnings about the growing cyber threats facing the country.
The incident, which JLR announced on Tuesday, is believed to be a supply chain attack that began on August 31, 2025. A group calling itself Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters has claimed responsibility. The attack has forced JLR to shut down its systems to mitigate the impact, with the Halewood plant near Liverpool expected to remain closed until Wednesday.
The NCSC has warned that the UK is underestimating cyberattack risks and failing to prepare for responses. This incident follows a string of cyber incidents affecting other British household names, including Marks & Spencer, the Co-op, and Harrods. JLR, with revenues of £28.99 billion ($38.75 billion) last year and over 39,000 employees worldwide, is a significant target for cybercriminals.
While there is no evidence of customer data theft at this stage, the incident has severely disrupted JLR's production and retail operations. The company's pre-tax profits dropped by 49% in the second quarter of this year due to U.S. tariffs and other factors, making the timing of this cybersecurity incident particularly challenging.
JLR is the latest high-profile victim of a cyberattack, highlighting the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures across all sectors. The NCSC's call for a strategic policy agenda to tackle growing cybersecurity risks underscores the importance of proactive approaches to protect businesses and consumers alike.
