Green Youth Chairperson Jette Nietzard Faces Controversy Over "ACAB" Sweater; Doubles Down on Criticism of Green Party Leadership

Amidst criticism and controversy following her Instagram post wearing an 'ACAB' (All Cops Are Bastards) sweater, Jette Nietzard, the head of the Green Youth, has chosen to confront the Green Party leadership instead of backing down. According to an interview with "Der Spiegel," Nietzard refuses to apologize and plans to use further provocative statements to regain the attention of the party's youth wing.

In the interview, Nietzard admitted that she posted the controversial sweater photo as a private individual, but she argued that the outrage was naive. While conceding that every individual police officer is not a problem, she emphasized that many people from marginalized communities fear police due to systemic issues. Nietzard contends that the Green Party should not accept this fear of the state that purports to protect its citizens.

Although the Green Party leadership, including Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann and high-ranking officials like Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour, has distanced itself from Nietzard's stance, the Green Youth chairperson has lashed out against her own party leadership. Nietzard argued that the Green Party should reflect on the consequences of their election defeat, with a focus on abandoning their centrist approach in favor of a more leftist platform.

Despite accusations that her provocative actions have harmed the party, Nietzard maintains that the party's handling of her critique is the real cause of damage to the party's reputation. Nietzard also defended her style of communication, asserting that attracting attention is her best tool in leading the Green Youth. The increase in Green Youth membership by 3,500 since Nietzard and co-chair Jakob Blasel assumed leadership, according to Nietzard, is evidence of her effective strategy.

In light of the recent election defeat and the resulting intraparty tensions, Nietzard's controversial actions highlight deeper divisions within the Green Party. While some party members support the party leadership's critique of Nietzard, others see her actions as a legitimate critique of systemic issues within police forces. Despite the backlash, Nietzard has no plans to resign and intends to lead the Green Youth until her term expires in October.
