Kärcher Canteens First in Germany to Earn Food Waste Reduction Certificate
In a significant step towards sustainability, Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG has been recognised for its commitment to reducing food waste. The company's canteens have become the first in Germany to receive a certificate from the Out-of-House Catering Association (KAHV) in 2023.
Kärcher's dedication to this cause is not new. In late 2022, it became the first company to earn four External: GreenCanteen labels. The company's canteens actively participate in waste reduction, conducting regular measurements to track their progress. Around 40 catering establishments and businesses join them in this effort, measuring their food waste over the course of the year in two periods.
The state of Baden-Württemberg supports these initiatives. The State Center for Nutrition (LErn BW) organises statewide waste weeks in Catering annually. Moreover, the state government has implemented the Administrative Regulation Canteen, creating conditions for operators to avoid food waste.
Kärcher's achievement highlights the importance of corporate responsibility in tackling food waste. By switching to regional and local suppliers who prioritise species-appropriate husbandry, the company demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability. With over ten million tons of food wasted annually in the United States, and nearly 20 percent of that from out-of-home catering, Kärcher's leadership in this area is commendable.
