Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan Seek to Amplify Trade, Transit, and Energy Cooperation

Astana, Kazakhstan - Leaders of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic are Working to Enhance Trade, Boost the Launch of the Industrial Trade and Logistics Complex, and Strengthen Transit and Transport ties.

During a February 25 meeting in Astana, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed these priorities with Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers and head of the Presidential Administration, who made his first official foreign visit to Kazakhstan.

Kasymaliev stressed the importance of strengthening political, trade, economic, water, energy, cultural, and humanitarian ties between the two countries. He assured that joint efforts are being made to accomplish all tasks assigned by the leaders of both nations in conjunction with their Kazakh counterparts.

In meetings with Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, mutual trade worth $1.7 billion was acknowledged for the previous year, while talks revolved around border checkpoint improvements to increase capacity.

Bektenov addressed water supply issues along the Shu and Talas rivers, the maintenance of the Kirov Reservoir, and the bolstering of regional energy security.

Regarding tourism, plans were discussed for developing cross-border eco-routes, enhancing active tourism infrastructure, and attracting investment in hotel businesses.

In cultural and humanitarian cooperation, Kazakhstan is planning to hold Days of Kazakh Cinema in the Kyrgyz Republic this year. Negotiations are also underway to establish extensions of Kazakh universities in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Notably, Kazakhstan has recently ratified an agreement with Kyrgyzstan on mutual protection of investments, aiming to create favorable conditions for secure investments and resolve disputes. This agreement offers most-favored-nation treatment to foreign investors. Additionally, talks are ongoing for the launch of a fiber optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea to enhance regional digital connectivity.

As revealed by these developments, a promising outlook exists for the expansion of trade opportunities between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, focusing on economic cooperation and infrastructure development.
