In May 2025, employment trends in Kentucky showed a mixed picture, with some sectors experiencing growth while others saw declines.

The government sector saw an increase of 5,300 jobs compared to May 2024, a growth of 1.7%. This expansion was also seen in the local and state government, with the local government adding 600 jobs and the state government 200 jobs more than in April. The federal government, however, reported a decrease of 400 jobs in May compared to April.

The construction sector continued its positive trend, with employment up by 6,600 positions or 7.1% from one year ago. This growth was partly offset by a decrease of 100 jobs in May compared to April.

The transportation, warehousing, and utilities subsector also saw an increase of 500 jobs in May. In contrast, the mining and logging sector, which had seen a decrease of 600 jobs from May 2024 to May 2025, managed to add 100 jobs in May.

However, several sectors experienced declines. The health care and social assistance subsector fell by 200 jobs in May 2025, while the professional and business services sector, the information services sector, and the other services sector each saw a decrease of 200, 200, and 300 jobs, respectively, from April to May. The professional, scientific and technical services subsector and the educational services subsector each reported a decrease of 100 and 200 jobs, respectively, in May 2025.

The manufacturing sector, which had been declining, experienced a loss of about 1,400 jobs from April 2025 to May 2025. The leisure and hospitality sector, which had been contracting over the past year, saw a loss of approximately 700 jobs year-over-year, with growth in arts, entertainment, and recreation offset by larger losses in accommodations and food services.

Despite these sectoral fluctuations, the overall unemployment rate in the U.S. for May 2025 was 4.2%, while Kentucky's preliminary unemployment rate was 5%. The number of people employed in May increased by 4,321 to 2,013,428, and the number of unemployed decreased by 3,046 to 106,312.
