KWS Teams Up With Chinese Firm for CRISPR/Cas Plant Breeding

German seed producer KWS has teamed up with Chinese firm Shandong Shunfeng Biotechnology for genomic plant breeding. This collaboration, facilitated by a shift in EU politics, aims to speed up the creation of climate-resilient crops using CRISPR/Cas technology.

The EU's recent openness to genomic breeding has created favorable conditions for collaboration. KWS, a leading German breeder, has signed a global licensing agreement with the Chinese company to drive this innovation.

The goal is to breed adapted plant varieties faster, enabling traits to be exchanged more efficiently on a shared platform. This will also hasten the market introduction of CRISPR/Cas-edited varieties. The companies hope that this partnership will help them stay ahead in the race to combat the climate crisis through agriculture.

The European Commission, Council of the European Union, and European Parliament are key to further regulatory changes in the EU. As the political landscape evolves, so too does the potential for genomic plant breeding to address global challenges like climate change.
