Lagos Halts Land Reclamation Projects Over Environmental, Social Risks
Lagos State Government has halted all land reclamation projects across the state due to environmental and social risks. The move, announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources via his official X account, aims to safeguard the environment and residents' wellbeing.
The suspension, effective immediately, applies to all ongoing and planned reclamation activities, regardless of prior approvals. The ministry has set a seven-day deadline for compliance, after which it will take action to decommission illegal sites, restore blocked water channels, and prosecute offenders.
The ministry cited unregulated reclamation projects as a cause for increased flooding, coastal erosion, disrupted livelihoods, reduced biodiversity, and impaired water quality. It emphasized that all approved projects must now undergo proper documentation and monitoring, while ongoing or planned activities must secure Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval and drainage clearance before proceeding.
The Lagos State Government's directive is part of broader efforts to protect the environment and ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents. The suspension of land reclamation projects is a significant step towards mitigating environmental and social risks in vulnerable coastal and lagoon areas across the state.
