Leading the way in organized energy management, Bergisch Gladbach city showcases its municipal energy management at the NRW-Congress of NRW.Energy4Climate.

Bergisch Gladbach, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has been selected as a practical example of the successful implementation of the Kom.EMS standard, a digital energy management tool designed to systematically evaluate, develop, and sustainably anchor energy management in administrations.

On September 11, 2025, Jasper Steeger, Energy Manager of the city of Bergisch Gladbach, presented the implementation and progress of the city's energy management with Kom.EMS at the NRW Communal Congress held in Wuppertal's Historical City Hall. The invitation to speak was extended by the state agency for energy and climate protection in North Rhine-Westphalia, NRW.Energy4Climate.

Prof. Dr. Kornelia Drees and Dirk Depping, both Kom.EMS coaches, also shared their insights at the event. The city's energy management presented its work with the digital tool Kom.EMS, highlighting Bergisch Gladbach's pioneering role in North Rhine-Westphalia in striving for Kom.EMS certification.

The event underscored the importance of Bergisch Gladbach as a committed example in the implementation of Kom.EMS. It sparked great interest among representatives from municipalities throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, especially from energy-relevant administrative areas.

The city has already made significant progress in the implementation of Kom.EMS, collaborating closely with external coaches, specialist departments, the safety officer, and an energy control system. A key topic at the event was the introduction of energy-saving models in schools and kindergartens.

NRW.Energy4Climate, a key supporter of companies and municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia in efficiently implementing climate protection measures, also emphasised the importance of systematic energy management for municipal climate protection. The organisation focuses on the municipal level, providing concrete support for funding programs, project development, and knowledge transfer.

North Rhine-Westphalia aims to become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe. NRW.Energy4Climate relies on the exchange of experience with committed cities like Bergisch Gladbach to achieve this goal. However, there are no search results indicating which other cities in North Rhine-Westphalia besides Bergisch Gladbach have already decided to pursue certification according to the Kom.EMS standard.

The expert forum at the NRW Communal Congress focused on practical approaches to reducing municipal energy costs. The forum underscored the opportunities and challenges in implementing the Kom.EMS standard and cross-administrative cooperation, encouraging other municipalities to follow Bergisch Gladbach's lead in adopting sustainable energy management practices.
