Light vehicle sales in Russia for September experienced a 33% year-on-year boost
The automotive market demonstrated a 26% year-over-year growth in September 2024, with a total of 167,900 units sold. However, a 2% monthly decline was observed compared to August. This surge encompasses not only passenger cars but also light commercial vehicles (LCVs), trucks, and buses.
More specifically, 11,500 LCVs were bought in September, marking a 23% year-over-year increase but a 5% drop month-over-month. Conversely, truck sales decreased by 26% year-over-year and saw an 8% decline month-over-month, totaling 9,900 units sold. Meanwhile, bus sales rose by 5% year-over-year but dropped by 24% compared to the previous month, resulting in 1,000 units being sold.
From January to September 2024, the sales of new passenger cars increased by 59% year-over-year to 1.14 million units. Overall automotive sales also saw a 48% rise to 1.3 million units. During the same period, the LCV market expanded by 35% to 70,700 units, trucks dropped by 12% to 103,300 units, and bus sales rose by 12% to 13,100 units.
The sales of domestically produced vehicles expanded by 29% year-over-year to 585,000 units over the first nine months of 2024.
In terms of electric vehicles, global sales exceeded 17 million in 2024 and accounted for more than 20% of the market. Specific data for the first nine months of 2024, particularly for individual countries, is not available without access to detailed regional or national sales reports for that period. In this context, Europe experienced significant growth in early 2025, with electric car sales surging by 25% in the first four months of the year.
Domestically, electric vehicle sales during the first nine months of 2024 rose by 65% year-over-year to 15,200 units. The share of domestic models accounted for 19% of these sales, compared to 21% in the same period last year.
The increased demand in the automotive sector extended to other sectors, such as finance, as September 2024 saw an 11,500 unit increase in light commercial vehicle (LCV) financing. Furthermore, the transportation industry was also impacted by the growth in the automotive industry, with a 167,900 unit surge in vehicle sales during the same month.
