Los Angeles County Business Federation Honors Developer Ali Sahabi with Public-Private Impact Award

In a ceremony on September 25, 2024, Ali Sahabi, a renowned figure in the real estate development and sustainability sector, received the first Public-Private Impact Award from the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed). The recognition came in acknowledgement of Sahabi's significant contributions to bringing together business, government, and non-profit leaders to advance sustainability and resilience.

Sahabi's work has been instrumental in pioneering the Green Valley Initiative, a regional movement towards sustainability. This pioneering effort aimed to create a livable, sustainable, and waste-free community in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The Green Valley Initiative, led by Sahabi through his nonprofit Green Institute for Village Empowerment, has been hailed as a potential model for the rest of the country.

One of the key initiatives under the Green Valley Initiative is a job skill training program in the home building industry. Participants in this program earn a job-readiness certificate upon completion, preparing them for employment in the sector.

The award presentation highlighted four specific examples of Public-Private Partnerships by Sahabi. One such example is the Dos Lagos Mixed Use Development, where Sahabi transformed an abandoned 543-acre silica mine into a thriving, sustainable community. Dos Lagos earned several awards, including the California Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for Sustainable Communities.

Aside from his work with the Green Valley Initiative, Sahabi has also been active in other professional, civic, and non-profit organizations. He is a member of the California Apartment Association, California Building Officials, California Manufacturers & Technology Association, Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles County Business Federation, and U.S. Resiliency Council, among others.

In addition to his work in sustainability, Sahabi has also been involved in efforts to make communities more resilient. This includes the Resilience Advantage webinar series, a collaboration between the U.S. Resiliency Council, BizFed, LAEDC, LA Chamber of Commerce, and Optimum Seismic, Inc., with the US Small Business Administration as a co-sponsor. The webinars aimed to educate business owners on how to protect their businesses, buildings, and employees from earthquakes and recover quickly from damage.

Terry Tamminen, President/CEO of AltaSea, praised the Green Valley Initiative for its vision and impact, stating that it could serve as a model for the rest of the country. Evan Reis, SE, Executive Director and Co-founder of the U.S. Resiliency Council, also highlighted Sahabi's role in the Resilience Advantage webinar series, citing his ability to create relationships between diverse groups of stakeholders.

With his Master of Real Estate Development degree from the University of Southern California School of Urban Planning and Development, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Pepperdine University, Sahabi continues to make significant strides in the field of sustainable and resilient community development. His work in bringing together diverse stakeholders for the common goal of a better, more sustainable future is truly commendable.
