Mahindra opens a new production facility in South Africa
In South Africa, the Mahindra Durban facility has undergone an impressive transformation, upgrading to a state-of-the-art vehicle assembly plant. With a capacity to assemble over 1,000 Mahindra Pik-Up single- and double-cab models per month, the facility aims to scale up to 1,500 vehicles per month, representing a 67% boost in capacity.
This expansion is in response to the growing local demand for affordable vehicles, particularly the Pik-Up model, which has found favour among farmers and regional police forces. The locally assembled pick-ups have also made their way to Mozambique's police force.
Mahindra has plans to introduce two fully electric vehicle models, already launched in India, to the South African market once local infrastructure and business conditions become favourable. These electric vehicles will leverage the expanded production capacity of the Durban facility.
The transition from a semi-knockdown (SKD) operation to full assembly increases the local manufacturing complexity, potentially supporting a higher degree of local component use. However, specific details about the extent or targets for local sourcing of parts have not been disclosed.
Mahindra began assembling pick-ups in South Africa in 2018, and the Durban facility has proven its flexibility, accommodating new models as they are introduced. In addition to pick-ups, Mahindra also retails its SUVs in South Africa, including the XUV700, Scorpion N, and XUV 3XO. The brand's global engineering teams are working closely with local suppliers to increase the level of locally sourced components.
