In an exciting development, Mahindra & Mahindra, the Indian automotive giant, has announced the launch of its new Pik Up, a game-changer for the company as it aims for international markets. The new vehicle, set to debut in India later in 2023, will be locally launched in 2024, with Australasia, alongside South Africa, being key markets outside of India.

The new Pik Up is based on the Global Pik Up concept revealed in 2023. Mahindra, with its three decades of experience importing tractors and the original Pik Up, has carefully observed local conditions and market requirements. This valuable insight has been applied to create a vehicle that truly resonates with the needs of the Australasian ute market.

The new Pik Up will be engineered to meet European and Australian crash-safety standards, ensuring top-notch safety features. It will be equipped with advanced driver-assist systems such as autonomous emergency braking, lane support technologies, trailer-sway mitigation, driver-attention alert, and a variety of airbags.

Under the bonnet, a variation of Mahindra's 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine will power the new Pik Up. However, hybrid powertrains are also under investigation for the mid-term future. Initially, these hybrid powertrains will be introduced in future Mahindra SUVs with transverse-engine applications, and may be adapted for the Pik Up and Thar Roxx later.

Mahindra President of Automotive Technology and Product Development, Velusamy R, has stated that the new Pik Up is the number one dream program for the company. The vehicle will share nothing with the previous Pik Up, instead being based on the new Thar Roxx SUV's ladder-frame chassis.

The new Pik Up will be offered in multiple bespoke body styles, including two-door and four-door guises. It will be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Mahindra has gained confidence in its vehicles based on feedback from their performance. One example of this is when one of their vehicles reached a remarkable one million kilometres. This success has fueled the company's ambition to deliver a vehicle that not only meets but exceeds customer expectations.

Byron Mathioudakis, contributing journalist for this article, looks forward to the release of the new Mahindra Pik Up in Australia before 2027, with the model currently in its final development stage and planned to arrive in 2026. The engineering aspect of the new Pik Up, rather than its technology or content, is not something that can be bought off the shelf. Mahindra is preparing the next-generation Pik Up specifically for the Australasian ute market, with inputs from Australian market experts during its development phase.

Stay tuned for more updates on the new Mahindra Pik Up as it makes its way to Australasian shores.
