Major Customs Operation Uncovers Illegal Employment in Hesse Restaurants
Customs authorities in Hesse have conducted a major operation targeting illegal employment practices, with a focus on restaurants, guesthouses, and snack bars across North, East, and Central Hesse. The inspections, led by the Main Customs Office Gießen, uncovered various irregularities and led to arrests.
Over 80 customs officers, assisted by local tax offices and tax investigators, inspected 38 establishments. The operation, part of a nationwide effort by the Finance Control of Illegal Employment (Finanzkontrolle Schwarzarbeit) of the German Customs (Zoll), aimed to secure social security systems and state revenues by ensuring fair working conditions and competitive business environments.
The inspections, which can be random or full checks of all employees, detected illegal employment, performance fraud, minimum wage violations, and social security irregularities. In Limburg-Weilburg, Gießen, Friedberg, Kassel, and the Schwalm-Eder district, around 130 employment relationships were checked, with initial irregularities found on-site. These included people working without proper documentation, underpayment of the minimum wage, missing social security notifications, performance fraud, and notification violations.
Nine men were arrested for working without necessary work and residence permits, with criminal proceedings initiated against them.
The operation highlights the commitment of authorities to combat illegal employment and protect workers' rights. Employers found violating rules may face legal consequences. The Main Customs Office Gießen will continue to conduct risk-oriented inspections to maintain fair working conditions and a level playing field for businesses.
