Get the latest on Volkswagen's plans to reduce its workforce.

Volkswagen has successfully managed to shed around 20,000 jobs as part of their effort to boost competitiveness, with approximately 20,000 employees agreeing to various exit strategies. The Cherry on the cake? Some employees are receiving hefty severance packages, with the amount dependent on their years of service with the automaker.

Personnel Director Gunnar Kilian announced this development during a works meeting in Wolfsburg. He revealed that around two-thirds of these job cuts will be through early retirement, while the rest will be through voluntary exit programs.

The number of jobs on the chopping block reaches a staggering 35,000 by 2030. The aim is to slash more than a quarter of the existing 130,000 jobs within the company's German sites.

A Close Shave: The Volkswagen Crisis

On the brink of disaster, Volkswagen and employee unions reached a deal on a comprehensive cost-saving program following a grueling wage negotiation. Plant closures and layoffs in Germany were avoided, at least for now.

Kilian stated, "The first measures of the 'Future Volkswagen' agreement are taking effect, and we are on track." This move signifies a significant leap forward in Volkswagen's restructuring process.

However, the automaker is far from reaching its target with the cost-cutting initiative, as Brand Finance Director David Powels pointed out: "We still have a long road ahead." The ultimate objective is to make Volkswagen competitive and future-proof by 2029.

Behind the Scenes: Volkswagen's Savings Program and Initiatives

While details on the company's specific job-cutting measures are scarce, here's a look at some of the savings programs Volkswagen offers:

  1. Volkswagen Partner Program: This program scores a sweet deal for employees of participating companies, offering discounts on new Volkswagen vehicles. It includes a negotiated bonus and is available to employees of companies like Costco, Sirius XM Radio, and USAA.
  2. Holiday Promotions: Special offers, such as $5,000 customer bonuses or reduced financing rates, are rolled out during holidays like Memorial Day.
  3. Military & First Responders Program, College Graduate Program: These programs offer rebates to specific groups, including military personnel, first responders, and recent college graduates.

  1. In an effort to maintain competitiveness, Volkswagen might consider implementing community policies that encourage or provide vocational training for employees who are affected by the job cuts, potentially leading toa future transition to other industries or business ventures.
  2. To secure the future of the company, Volkswagen could explore finance options, such as partnerships with financial institutions, to provide funds for vocational training programs for those who are impacted by the job cuts, ensuring a skilled workforce for the industry.
