Funk's most notable case as a former Chicago federal prosecutor was his work on Operation Family Secrets, a landmark investigation into organized crime and mob-related murders. The investigation was described by National Public Radio as one of the "most important criminal investigations in American history" and by the FBI as the "nation's most extensive" mob-murder case, involving crimes that inspired the 1995 movie Casino.
During his decade-long tenure as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago (2000–2010), Funk successfully tried dozens of federal and state jury trials, led over 500 investigations, and participated as lead counsel in more than 700 in-court evidentiary hearings and contested proceedings.
