Markus Funk has assumed the position of Partner in our law firm situated in Chicago.

Markus Funk, a renowned attorney with a distinguished career in complex litigation, has joined White & Case LLP as a partner in Chicago. Funk's extensive experience will bolster the firm's litigation capabilities, particularly in the area of white collar crimes.

Funk's most notable case as a former Chicago federal prosecutor was his work on Operation Family Secrets, a landmark investigation into organized crime and mob-related murders. For this case, he received the Attorney General's Award in 2007. The investigation was described by National Public Radio as one of the "most important criminal investigations in American history" and by the FBI as the "nation's most extensive" mob-murder case, involving crimes that inspired the 1995 movie Casino.

During his decade-long tenure as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago (2000–2010), Funk successfully tried dozens of federal and state jury trials, led over 500 investigations, and participated as lead counsel in more than 700 in-court evidentiary hearings and contested proceedings. While specific additional cases are not named in the search results, his prosecutorial work spanned a wide range of complex matters, including product liability, contract and securities fraud, counterfeiting, commodities fraud, defamation, intellectual property, insider trading, and False Claims Act violations.

Before joining White & Case LLP, Funk was global chair of the white collar and investigations practice at another leading law firm for four years. He has also held various leadership roles in his previous firm. Funk's arrival at White & Case LLP builds on recent additions to its disputes capabilities, including the addition of Jonathan Polkes, Stacy Nettleton, Adam Banks, Xavier Hubert, and Brent Wible.

White & Case Co-Head of Global Litigation, David Hille, stated that Funk's extensive experience will add immediate depth to their team in Chicago. Funk expressed excitement about joining White & Case LLP, citing respect for its Litigation Practice and white collar capabilities.

In addition to his legal work, Funk has written a dozen law-related books and served as a lecturer in law at the University of Oxford, where he also holds a PhD. He has also served as the DOJ's conflict-deployed Section Chief in Kosovo, helping oversee US efforts to restructure and modernize Kosovo's legal system.

Funk's achievements have been recognised with the DOJ's highest trial performance award and the State Department's highest general service award, making him the first attorney to receive both accolades. His addition to White & Case LLP is a significant step forward for the firm's Global Litigation Practice.
