A massive fireball explosion rocked the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, Los Angeles, late last night. Terrifying images and videos of the blaze flooded social media, with locals reporting a loud blast and shockwaves felt across the city.
The explosion occurred around 9:35pm local time at the refinery, which supplies over 40% of jet fuel and more than 20% of motor fuel across southern California. Firefighters swiftly responded to the scene, containing the fire to one section of the facility. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported, and operations at nearby LAX airport remain unaffected.
The Chevron refinery, the largest on the west coast, produces 276,000 barrels of crude oil daily, employing a workforce of 1,000 employees and 1,000 contractors. Residents were advised to stay indoors and shut their windows as a precaution.
The fire at the Chevron refinery has been contained, with no impact on LAX operations or injuries reported. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. The refinery's significance to southern California's fuel supply ensures that the situation will be closely monitored.
