MBDA Wins Italian Contract for Advanced TESEO MK2/E Anti-Ship Missile
MBDA has secured a production contract with Italy's National Directorate of Naval Armaments for the new-generation TESEO MK2/E anti-ship missile. This deal follows a 2021 contract that covered development and paves the way for equipping multiple Italian surface combatants with this advanced weapon system.
The TESEO MK2/E missile is a substantially redesigned weapon, featuring an Active Electronically Scanned Array seeker and modern datalink functions for in-flight control. It builds on decades of experience with the TESEO family, previously marketed as OTOMAT. The missile can engage long-range naval and land targets and be retasked in flight via satellite communications, offering a secondary deep strike role.
The production run will supply these missiles for various Italian surface combatants, including FREMM EVO frigates, MPCS/PPA multi-role ships, and planned DDX destroyers. Spain has also shown interest in this advanced anti-ship weapon system. The contract transitions the programme into serial production, supporting Italy's plans to fit next-generation surface ships with a modern anti-ship and land attack option.
MBDA's Lorenzo Mariani described the TESEO MK2/E as exportable technology, validating the programme's progress and industrial alignment with the Italian Navy. The missile will also operate alongside the existing MK2/A variant fitted to FREMM and Horizon class vessels, further enhancing Italy's naval capabilities.
