Mercedes-Benz A-Class extended production schedule, expected sale duration up to 2028
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback, a popular contender in the premium compact segment, will continue its production until at least 2028. This decision comes in response to the ongoing demand for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in Europe, despite a relatively slower uptake of new electric models.
Jorg Burzer, head of production at Mercedes-Benz, confirmed the extension of the A-Class lineup. The extension will see the A-Class hatchback receiving possible updates rather than a full redesign, positioning it to compete effectively against rivals like the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.
Production of the A-Class hatchback is set to move from Germany to the Kecskemét plant in Hungary to accommodate new models based on Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA). This shift will pave the way for the production of the new compact range from Mercedes, including the CLA sedan, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA, and GLB, all of which will be available with both ICE and electric powertrain options.
Meanwhile, the A-Class sedan has ceased production. However, the A-Class hatchback will maintain its place until 2028 with potential mid-cycle revisions to stay competitive. The upcoming CLA model will take over as the new entry point to the brand lineup.
The demand for the A-Class hatchback remains strong, despite being nearly a decade old. To meet the EU7 emission regulations, the A-Class hatchback will be updated in late 2026. Performance variants such as the A35 and A45 AMG hatchbacks are expected to be discontinued due to non-compliance with these upcoming standards.
In the premium compact sedan segment, the new CLA will take on the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. Mercedes-Benz is re-evaluating its decision to continue the production of ICE vehicles due to continued demand, but the shift towards electric vehicles is evident in the new compact range.
The Audi A4, priced at ₹ 47.93 Lakhs, and the Toyota Camry, available for ₹ 48 Lakhs, are other options in the premium compact sedan segment. The Skoda Superb 2025 is expected to be priced between ₹ 55 - 60 Lakhs. On the electric front, the BYD Seal, an electric vehicle with an 82.56 kWh battery and a range of 650 km, is priced at ₹ 41 Lakhs.
The new concept version of the CLA was showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, and the new-generation CLA will be available in India. The A-Class hatchback will be available until 2028, providing consumers with a familiar and competitive option in the premium compact segment.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback's continued production until 2028 signifies a strong market preference for cars with internal combustion engine (ICE) in the EU, even as new electric models gain slower acceptance. Jorg Burzer's confirmation of the A-Class extension hints at potential updates rather than a full redesign, positioning the hatchback to maintain its competitive edge against contenders like the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. In the midst of this transition, Mercedes-Benz is also set to produce a new compact range, including electrified versions of the CLA sedan, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA, and GLB, all constructed on the Modular Architecture (MMA).
