Mexico-Toluca Train Tunnel Near Completion After Years of Delays

The construction of Line 12's tunnel for the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train is nearing completion, with only 30 meters left. Meanwhile, the responsible authority and details about the delay in the project's completion are being clarified.

The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) is typically in charge of such large infrastructure projects. However, the current minister's name is not readily available as ministerial positions change regularly, and my knowledge cutoff is December 2023.

The Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train project has faced several delays since its inception in 2014. These delays have been due to issues like land acquisitions, environmental regulations, technical challenges, and financial constraints. As of late 2023/early 2024, the project's operational phase was delayed due to tunnel completion and signal system integration. The exact duration of this delay was not specified in public sources.

Once the tunnel is finished, track installation, system setup, and the construction of the Observatory station will commence. Jesus Antonio Esteva Medina, the SICT Secretary, announced the full opening of the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

The construction of Line 12 of the Metro from Mixcoac to Observatorio is progressing slowly due to security concerns and the removal of anthropogenic fill and garbage debris. The opening is delayed due to ongoing tests and the installation of signaling systems in the final stretch from Santa Fe to Observatorio.

The completion of Line 12's tunnel for the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train is imminent, with only 30 meters remaining. The responsible authority and project delays are being clarified. The project's full opening is expected by the end of 2023 or early 2024, following the completion of the tunnel and other construction phases.
