MSPs Evolve: Now Offering IT Security Education and Acting as Outsourced CIOs

Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are evolving their roles beyond traditional IT support, now offering maps (strategies) for IT security education and acting as outsourced Chief Information Officers (CIOs). This shift is driven by increasing client awareness of threats and a focus on outcomes over technical delivery.

End customers are prioritising service costs versus downtime loss, making it crucial for MSPs to tailor mapped managed security services to specific industry and business needs. This involves understanding the customer's business and total costs of operation.

Knowledge contributes over 50% to total cyber threat defence, highlighting the importance of employee education. However, outsourced IT teams are often kept at arm's length, leading to a lack of internal ambassadors for IT security. MSPs can address this by offering social security (education) and positioning themselves as educators and outsourced CIOs.

Many businesses outsource IT operations due to financial or resource-based reasons. While this can lead to a lack of IT security education among employees, MSPs can mitigate this by providing relevant education and addressing security issues reactively.

MSPs are expanding their services to include IT security education, enhancing their role as outsourced CIOs. By understanding customer needs, providing tailored services, and educating employees, MSPs can improve clients' cybersecurity posture and reduce the likelihood of breaches.
