Mumbai Experiences Monorail Halt for Multiple Improvements by MMRDA

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has temporarily suspended monorail services, with the aim of improving the system and making it future-ready. The suspension, which took effect on September 17, will allow for the installation, commissioning, and integrated testing of new rakes and signalling systems.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, the Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, asserted that the suspension is a carefully thought-out step to rejuvenate the Monorail. Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Chairman of MMRDA, stated that the upgrades will ensure safer and more reliable services for citizens.

One of the key components of the upgrades is the installation of a new Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This system, indigenously developed in Hyderabad, is being installed for the first time in the Mumbai Monorail. The CBTC system includes 260 Wi-Fi access points, 500 RFID tags, 90 train detection systems, and several WATC units. Additionally, five electronic interlockings have been installed at 32 locations.

To boost local production and reduce dependency on imports, the MMRDA plans to manufacture the existing and new monorail trains in Mumbai itself. In collaboration with SMH Rail, the MMRDA has procured ten new Make-in-India rakes from M/s MEDHA company. The new rakes, along with the advanced CBTC signalling and the refurbishment of the existing fleet, will be key components of the upgrades.

The MMRDA also plans to facilitate the complete overhauling and retrofitting of older rakes to ensure glitch-free performance. The short block is necessary to complete the work with speed and precision, as stated by Shinde. He also mentioned that the block of the Monorail is a vital step in strengthening Mumbai's transport backbone.

The MMRDA values the patience of citizens and assures them that when the Monorail returns, it will be with renewed strength, reliability, and the confidence to serve Mumbai better. The upgrades aim to make the monorail system safer, more dependable, and future-ready, ensuring a smoother and more efficient ride for all.
