Mumbai Update: Tata Trust Shows Signs of Reviving Tata Garden at Breach Candy Following Interruptions on Coastal Road

The Tata Garden in Breach Candy, renowned for its tranquil surroundings and gentle sea breeze, has been in a state of neglect following the Coastal Road project. The garden, one of the largest parks in south Mumbai, has been divided into three sections due to interchanging roads, causing damage and a lack of maintenance during construction.

However, a ray of hope has emerged for the garden's restoration. The Breach Candy Residents Forum (BCRF) and an online petition gathering over 2,600 signatures have been urging the Tatas to adopt and restore the park. After sustained efforts, the Tata Trust has agreed to re-adopt the Tata Garden in Mumbai's Breach Candy.

The residents are keen on the garden being restored and rechristened as "Ratan Tata Garden" in honor of Ratan Tata, continuing the legacy since the garden was originally adopted and developed by Tata Power Ltd under their Corporate Social Responsibility activities before the Coastal Road project.

Plans for restoration would require an estimated ₹2 to 3 crore investment to spruce up the garden, including repairing fencing and other infrastructure, which the municipal ward currently lacks funds to support. The positive response from Tata Trust offers hope for a nurturing caretaker to revive one of South Mumbai's largest parks that was once a green lung for the city.

The petition for the restoration of the Tata Garden in Breach Candy calls for someone to nurture and care for each piece of green in the park. The interchanging roads of the Coastal Road project have divided the Tata Garden into three sections, but the residents' efforts and the Tata Trust's agreement mark a significant step towards the garden's revival.

While a detailed timeline for actual restoration work has not been reported yet, the favorable Tata Trust response marks a key step toward the garden’s revival after the disruption caused by the Coastal Road project. The Tata Garden in Breach Candy, once a serene oasis in the heart of the city, is one step closer to regaining its former glory.
