Munich Airport Sees Strong Recovery in 2024, Handling 89% of 2019 Passenger Volume

Munich Airport has reported a significant increase in passenger numbers, with August and September 2024 being the busiest months so far this year. The airport handled 4.2 million passengers in August and 4.1 million in September, marking a strong recovery from pre-Corona levels.

The airport's passenger growth slowed in the third quarter of 2024, reaching 9.2% compared to the first half of the year's 14.8%. Despite this, Munich Airport reached 89% of its 2019 passenger volume in the same period, indicating a consistent recovery.

Business travel and international connections are driving this recovery. The airport's cargo volume also increased by 9% to 228,000 tons transported between January and September 2024. Munich Airport remains a crucial hub for international air cargo, particularly for goods transported to and from Asia.

Lufthansa is the airline with the highest passenger numbers at Munich Airport. It has reinforced its Munich hub with numerous connections, especially on long-haul routes to North America and Asia. The number of aircraft movements at the airport increased by 9% to 247,000 take-offs and landings in the third quarter of 2024.

From January to September 2024, Munich Airport saw a 12.5% increase in passenger numbers, totaling 31.4 million passengers. The airport's recovery is being driven by business travel and international connections, with cargo volume also showing significant growth. Munich Airport continues to play a vital role as a hub for both passenger travel and air cargo.
