Musk Pursues Legal Action Against Trump
Stepping away from Washington's political scene barely a fortnight ago, tech billionaire Elon Musk is now locking horns with former ally President Donald Trump. Musk decimated the tax and spending bill pushed by Trump, branding it a "filthy, outrageous monstrosity," and warned Congress members supporting it to face public backlash in the next election.
The midterm elections in the United States are set for early November 2026, at which point all members of the House of Representatives and approximately a third of the Senate will stand for re-election.
While such remarks from Musk may appear to be an idle threat, they carry some weight given his considerable financial support for Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, with donations exceeding $250 million. Musk vs. the White House
Nicknamed the "great magnificent law" by Trump, the budget bill narrowly passed the House of Representatives in May with a slim majority. However, several members of Trump's Republican Party in the Senate are obstructing the bill because of proposed increases in the debt ceiling and insufficient spending cuts.
Trump is currently attempting to bring recalcitrant Republican senators on board. Musk's outspoken remarks pose a challenge to these efforts and could undermine Trump's efforts to sway the Senate. The Great Divide

The bill includes various provisions, such as making permanent the tax cuts from Trump's first term, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, and cutting social benefits – efforts that face strong opposition from the Democrats.
Notably, left-wing Democratic senator Bernie Sanders applauded Musk's critique, writing on X: "Musk is spot on." Sanders highlighted that the wealthiest Americans were receiving $664 billion in tax breaks while $290 billion was being slashed from food assistance for the disadvantaged.
Setbacks in Washington
Musk withdrew from Washington, stating that the rule limiting the duration of external government employees to 130 days per year was the reason. However, signs had emerged in recent months of Musk's waning influence within Trump's inner circle, with media reports suggesting the tech billionaire losing power struggles with several cabinet members. In a recent development, Trump also eliminated the former NASA leadership candidate who was close to Musk from the running.
