New A72 product unveiled
After multiple delays due to funding issues, environmental concerns, and planning challenges, the final stretch of the A72 Autobahn between Rötha and the A38, initially planned to be completed in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, is still under development.
The latest updates suggest that the project might be completed in the early to mid-2020s, although an exact date remains uncertain and subject to change based on announcements from the Saxony State Ministry for Regional Development or the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMVI).
In the meantime, a significant milestone has been reached with the completion of the new section of the A72 between Leipzig-Süd junction and Zwenkau interchange, which is set to open on Saturday. This new 2-kilometre section will initially operate on only 3 out of the planned 6 lanes, with the remaining lanes to be added at a later date.
To minimise noise pollution for the nearby town of Großdeuben, a large noise protection wall has been constructed. In recent weeks, "whisper asphalt" has been laid on the new section, although it is worth noting that this special material requires more frequent maintenance and replacement.
Temporary restrictions or closures will be in effect in the area of the Zwenkau interchange during the opening weekend. A speed limit of 60 km/h will remain in place on the new section until further notice.
The completion of the entire Zwenkau interchange marks a significant step forward in the long-awaited project, with the final stretch south of Leipzig expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
