New SkyTrain vehicles, belonging to our company, initiate commercial operations in Vancouver.
The city of Vancouver is set to welcome a new generation of trains, the Mark V, as part of a modernization effort aimed at providing a more comfortable, accessible, and sustainable transit experience for Metro Vancouver commuters and visitors alike.
The new Mark V trains, designed, manufactured, and tested at our company's facilities in Canada, offer increased capacity to help TransLink keep pace with growing demand for transit. Each five-car Mark V train can carry 672 passengers, a 25% increase in capacity over the current four-car Mark III trains. These automated light metro trains are the longest on the SkyTrain network to date.
Key features of the Mark V trains include wider aisles with more standing room, spacious multi-use areas for bikes, luggage, strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility devices, enhanced safety and accessibility features, a mix of forward-facing and side seating, modern interior designs featuring striking Indigenous artwork by local First Nations artists on each windscreen, improved HVAC systems, and large digital displays showing station information to enhance the passenger experience.
TransLink has ordered a total of 235 Mark V cars (47 trains), with delivery expected by 2029. These new trains will serve the Expo and Millennium lines and support upcoming expansions including the Broadway Subway and Surrey-Langley SkyTrain projects. By the end of 2025, several five-car trains of the Mark V fleet will be running on the Expo Line and Millennium Line network.
The production of the Mark V trains supports over 280 local jobs. Our company is the only global rail mobility manufacturer to have production facilities in Canada, and approximately 5,000 highly-skilled Canadian employees work for our company. Michael Keroullé, President of our company Americas, stated that the entry of the Mark V light metro fleet marks a new chapter in sustainable urban mobility.
The SkyTrain is a recognized model of reliability among automated systems around the world, and our company has been the main rolling stock supplier for the SkyTrain since its debut in 1985. The new Mark V trains are a major milestone in the modernization of Vancouver's rapid transit system.
