Offshore cable work in Germany secured by SPIE in latest contract with Van Oord

In a significant development for the renewable energy sector, SPIE Wind Connect has been awarded a contract to terminate and test the inter-array cables at the 315 MW Windanker offshore wind farm, located 38 kilometres northeast of Rügen in the German exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Baltic Sea.

This contract is a follow-up to a similar one recently awarded to SPIE Wind Connect by Van Oord for work on inter-array cables at Ecowende's Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI farm in the Netherlands. The scope of work for SPIE Wind Connect at the Windanker offshore wind farm involves the termination and testing of 21, 66kV inter-array cables (IAC). These cables are essential for connecting the wind turbine generators to the offshore substation.

The Windanker farm is a joint venture between Iberdrola and Kansai Electric Power, with Iberdrola making the final investment decision for the project in June of last year. The project is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2025 and is planned to be completed by the second quarter of 2026.

Once fully operational in 2026, the Windanker wind farm will have the capacity to supply energy to approximately 315,000 households with renewable energy. The total value of the Windanker deal between Iberdrola and Kansai Electric Power is EUR 1.28 billion.

Sam Dowey, Managing Director at SPIE Wind Connect, stated that the contract further develops their long-term relationship with Van Oord. The work on the inter-array cables will be carried out by another contractor, Van Oord, who has signed a contract with SPIE Wind Connect for the termination and testing of the cables.

The Windanker farm is expected to be operational in the last quarter of 2026, adding another significant contribution to Germany's renewable energy goals.

  1. The Windanker offshore wind farm, a joint venture between Iberdrola and Kansai Electric Power, will supply energy to approximately 315,000 households with renewable energy upon completion in 2026, signifying a substantial investment in the renewable energy industry.
  2. The total value of the Windanker deal between Iberdrola and Kansai Electric Power is EUR 1.28 billion, indicating a substantial financial commitment towards the development of renewable energy.
  3. SPIE Wind Connect has been awarded contracts for the termination and testing of inter-array cables at both the Windanker offshore wind farm and Ecowende's Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI farm, demonstrating their significant role in the investment and development of the offshore wind energy market.
