The ongoing tender process for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, a 29.5-kilometer long system consisting of 21 strategic stations, continues unabated. The project, designed to improve connectivity between Penang and the mainland, reducing road congestion and improving accessibility, has been the subject of recent speculation.

Recent allegations, reported by a news portal citing industry sources, suggest that contractors for the project were instructed to revise the specifications of the electric train (ET) system to a smaller size. However, these claims have been categorically denied by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Minister Loke has stated that no response is necessary for the allegations regarding the revised specifications of the electric train system, as no award has been given for the project yet. He reiterated that the tender process is still ongoing and no specifications have been changed or instructions given to any bidder at this stage.

The bidders involved in the tender for the electric train system of the Mutiara Line LRT include CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd., Bombardier Transportation, Hyundai Rotem, and PT INKA. It is worth noting that the Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has reportedly asked bidders for the project to propose electric train sets that are smaller in size and have lower technological capabilities.

Local participation is assured to be a part of the procurement process for the Mutiara Line LRT project, including the assembly of train components. Minister Loke has given his assurance that local participation would remain an integral part of the process.

It is important to note that no specific allegations regarding the Mutiara Line LRT project have been confirmed or proven at this stage. The tender process includes evaluating submissions, but no contract has been awarded.

The launch of the Mutiara Line LRT project was held for the Professional Advancement in Trucking and Haulage (PATH) programme. The project, once completed, is expected to significantly enhance transportation infrastructure in the region.

Minister Loke has clarified that the claims are baseless, and the public is encouraged to await further official announcements regarding the project's progress.
