Osaka Expo Venue's Train Service Temporarily Halted
In the heart of western Japan, the ongoing 2025 World Exposition in Osaka was disrupted on August 14, 2025, when a power outage halted the Chuo Line, the only direct train service from the city centre to the expo site on Yumeshima Island.
The outage, affecting the line's powered rail alongside the tracks, caused the Chuo Line of Osaka Metro Co. to stop operating around 9:30 p.m., leaving many visitors stranded at Yumeshima Station and the expo venue.
With approximately 30,000 visitors inside the venue when the suspension occurred, many remained stranded overnight. The incident resulted in health issues for 36 people, who were hospitalized for symptoms such as heatstroke, headaches, and numbness, though none were serious.
Osaka Metro apologised for the inconvenience and blamed the outage on an issue with the powered rail system. The suspension caused a 30-minute delay in the expo's opening on August 14.
Despite the challenges, the expo organiser remained committed to improving emergency information sharing and operational responses to prevent recurrence. Visitors were urged to return to the venue, and entry to Yumeshima Station was restricted at one point due to the large number of stranded people.
Partial service resumed between Yumeshima Station and Cosmosquare Station around 10:10 p.m., but full service only restarted at about 5:25 a.m. the next morning. The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition expressed its gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response and support during the incident.
For those planning to visit the expo, it's essential to stay informed about the latest updates and plan alternative routes in case of unexpected disruptions. The organisers are working diligently to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
