Gas Prices in Ottawa Set to Drop by 10 Cents per Litre

Good news for drivers in Ottawa! According to Dan McTeague, the president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, gas prices are expected to drop by 10 cents per litre on Thursday.

The average price of gasoline in Ottawa will drop from 144.9 cents a litre to 134.9 cents a litre on this day. This significant price drop is a result of the seasonal switch from summer-blend to winter-grade fuel.

Winter-blend gasoline is less expensive to produce due to its simpler composition compared to summer-blend gasoline. One of the factors contributing to its lower cost is the use of butane as a substitute. Butane improves cold-start performance, making it an ideal choice for winter driving conditions.

In contrast, refiners are required to put in additives to summer-blend gasoline that stabilize it during hot weather. These additives are more expensive due to their role in maintaining the fuel's performance in warm conditions.

McTeague stated that the absence of these additives in winter-blend gasoline is a key factor in its lower cost. Stations in Ottawa are required to sell the summer blend gas between April 15 and Sept. 15. The switch from summer-blend gasoline to winter-grade fuel is mandated and happens in mid-September.

It's worth noting that the refineries producing winter gasoline are not explicitly named in the search results. However, the Heide Refinery operated by Klesch in Germany is mentioned as a significant producer of gasoline and is currently undergoing maintenance that may impact gasoline production.

This change in gas prices will undoubtedly bring relief to many drivers in Ottawa. So, fill up your tanks on Thursday and enjoy the savings!
