Ingolstadt Airport Express Celebrates Milestone and Continues to Shine as a Model of Sustainable Mobility
The Ingolstadt Airport Express, a regional shuttle service connecting Ingolstadt city to Munich Airport, has reached a significant milestone. As of 2025, the service has transported over 2.5 million passengers since its launch in May 1992.
The service, operated by Stadtbus Ingolstadt, SBI, has seen a remarkable increase in passengers over the years. In 2024, the Airport Express carried 140,000 passengers, a stark contrast to the 40,000 passengers it served when it first began operation.
Mayor Dr. Kern praised the Airport Express as a successful model for over 30 years and a flagship for customer-friendly local transport in Ingolstadt. He emphasized that the service contributes to modern, sustainable mobility, providing an eco-friendly alternative to car travel.
Three new MAN buses have been added to the Airport Express fleet in the current year, ensuring the service continues to meet the growing demand. The hourly service operates 365 days a year, with the first bus departing from Nordbahnhof at 3:00 AM and returning from the airport every hour on the hour from 5:00 AM to 12:15 AM.
The service calls at various stops along the route, including the ZOB and Kurt-Huber-Straße. Passengers can also enjoy a favorable parking option and an airport lounge at the North Station, starting their vacation from the beginning of the journey in Ingolstadt.
Upon prior registration, the Airport Express stops at the Agip gas station at the Langenbruck exit on the A9 motorway. Ticket purchase before the start of the journey is possible at the VGI customer center, ticket vending machines, and advance sales outlets. The best and most cost-effective way to buy tickets is via the VGI app before the journey.
