Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker Calls for Austerity Ahead of Upcoming Budget

In preparation for the cabinet retreat this weekend at Tegernsee, Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker has urged all ministers to practice fiscal restraint. While the minister does not completely rule out new debt for the fall budget, he maintains that significant new measures are not feasible at present.

Speaking to the German Press Agency, Füracker stated, "We have no room in the budget for major new measures. I already know that." He emphasized the necessity of adhering to the current tax forecast, which he believes is understood, but challenging in practice.

Furacker acknowledged that each department has its ideas and wishes for the budget, including his own. However, he underscored the importance of prioritizing and doing everything possible to make do with existing resources.

Regarding potential new debt, Füracker admitted that while taking on debt is not his goal, he cannot entirely rule it out. As the budget configuration approaches in the fall, the situation will depend on the tax forecast. If the forecast improves, the process will be less challenging. Conversely, if it worsens, new solutions will be necessary.

The discussion about possible new debt has already commenced across Germany. However, Füracker remains hopeful that the policies of the new black-red federal government will stimulate economic growth in 2026 and 2027.

Despite this optimism, Füracker expressed concern over international developments, particularly regarding Donald Trump's unpredictable policies. He believes that ongoing uncertainties hinder economic progress.

The cabinet retreat is scheduled to take place from Sunday to Monday at St. Quirin, Tegernsee. The event will include discussions on various contentious topics, such as the presence of the new Federal Minister of Economics, Katherina Reiche (CDU).

According to the latest tax forecast, Bavaria can expect a slight surplus of around 0.1 billion euros in 2026 compared to the previous autumn forecast. However, Füracker warns of a slight negative trend for 2027, maintaining a tense budget situation as it has been for years.
