Payment services at Belarusbank encounter another interruption.
In an unprecedented event, Belarusian banks, including Belarusbank, Belagroprombank, and Belinvestbank, encountered technical difficulties on July 9, 2025. The issues were attributed to a technical malfunction in the hardware and software complex of the Belarusian banking system, resulting in unauthorized write-offs of funds from client accounts and potentially negative balances on cards [1].
The Banking Processing Center of Belarus acknowledged the issue and assured the public that work was underway to resolve the problem and restore correct account balances in the near future [1]. Andrei Kartun, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank, further explained that the issue was not due to external interference or system hacking, but rather a technical glitch during a scheduled system update of the Bank Processing Center [2].
As a precautionary measure, Belarusbank announced planned technical maintenance from the night of July 26 to 27, 2025. During this period, a number of services—including operations on current and deposit accounts, loan repayments, and bank card registrations—will be temporarily unavailable. Cash transactions and card payments will also be impossible in the bank’s branches for one hour during this period, from 01:00 to 02:00 on July 27 [2].
The negative balances experienced by Belarusbank customers were different for every user. However, by the evening of July 10, all problems related to payments and correct balance display had been resolved for most users [2]. A notice has been posted on Belarusbank's official website regarding these temporary difficulties, which may affect holders of payment cards, deposits, and credit payers [2].
It is important to note that the money had not disappeared, and no one had withdrawn it. The issues were purely technical in nature. The banks assure their customers that they are taking all necessary steps to maintain and improve the banking system's stability and service performance.
