Peru's EV Market Sets New Record in H1 2025, but Legislation Lags
Peru's electrified vehicle market continues to grow, with a record-breaking first half of 2025, but the lack of supportive legislation is hindering further progress. More than 20 initiatives promoting electromobility were presented in Congress, yet none have been approved.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have seen a remarkable surge, doubling their sales figure to 366 units, a 102.2% increase. This growth reflects diminishing range anxiety and growing consumer confidence, as the share of BEVs within total electrified sales rose from 2.3% in 2021 to 8.3% in 2025.
The market's overall performance has been impressive. Peru broke its own record in the first half of 2025 with 4,440 units sold, a 37.1% increase from 2024. Conventional hybrids were the main driver of sales, with 2,134 vehicles sold, a 65% year-on-year increase. June 2025 alone saw 880 hybrid and electric vehicles registered, the highest monthly volume on record and a 35.4% year-on-year increase.
Despite the market's growth, Peru's electrified vehicle sales still lag behind countries like Colombia, which has surpassed 30% due to decisive public policy. The sector is eagerly awaiting the enactment of an Electromobility Act in 2025, hoping that it will stimulate the stock market and facilitate charging infrastructure. The lack of a robust regulatory framework and limited incentives in Peru contrasts with the commercial boom of electrified vehicles.
