A horrific scene unfolded in the residential area near Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat, India, as an Air India plane plummeted to the ground. The wreckage and debris of the downed Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft have been captured in images and videos, leaving the world stunned.
The disaster struck the medical facility building in Meghaninagar, with footage showing fragments of the plane's tail lodged inside the structure and a gather of onlookers peering up at the wreckage. The ill-fated flight crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel minutes after take-off at 1:38 pm.
Remarkable video footage reveals parts of the aircraft inside the multi-storey medical facility, including the renowned 'Royal Mess' food hall where a horrific scene unfolds. Meals were spilled across the floor amid the wreckage, and rows of dining tables with thalis (steel plates) still occupied lie broken and strewn about.
The plane also decimated the Atulyam Hostel, housing doctorate of medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) students, who were pursuing a degree in surgery.
A large smoldering piece of debris can be seen in video footage shot outside the building, along with pieces of wreckage and rubble scattered across the area.
Tragically, 241 passengers and crew members aboard the flight lost their lives, leaving one lone survivor receiving treatment in a hospital. The plane carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national. [1][2]
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident in a statement, saying, "The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words." [3]
