Progress in the establishment of Neue Hulsberg district, Bremen, remains positive – Land "Hallo Sorgenfrei" acquired by Building Cooperative
The "Frida" building cooperative is set to become an integral part of the growing Hulsberg Quarter, with plans to move in by 2026. This exciting development will see the construction of a three-story building with an attic on the "Hallo Sorgenfrei" plot, which will contain 34 apartments ranging from 30 to 105 square meters.
Located near the Old Pathology and the future Louise-Aston-Park, the "Hallo Sorgenfrei" plot, spanning approximately 2,800 square meters, is part of the 14-hectare urban development area in Bremen's eastern suburbs. This area is being managed by the municipal real estate development company Klinikum Bremen-Mitte GmbH & Co. KG.
The "Frida" building cooperative, consisting of 35 people aged between 47 and 81, aims to live communally, as ecologically and solidarity-based as possible. The cooperative has been active for more than four years, from its formation to the successful handover and signing of the purchase agreement.
The purchase agreement for the "Hallo Sorgenfrei" plot has been signed by Klinikum Bremen-Mitte GmbH & Co. KG and the hospital association Gesundheit Nord gGmbH Klinikverbund Bremen (GeNo).
While there are no specific mentions of new communal housing projects in Bremen's Hulsberg Quarter, Bremen's building cooperatives and their projects are crucial elements in Bremen's housing landscape. The potential for housing units to be developed through communal building and living in the coming years is at least 160 units, as stated by GEG Managing Director Florian Kommer.
Senator for Urban Development Özlem Ünsal commends the Frida building cooperative, stating they are "regional beacons of the hour" in challenging economic times for traditional project development. Kommer encourages all Bremers to join a diverse mosaic in Bremen's housing construction by forming groups, networking with existing building cooperatives like 'Karls', 'Fidas', 'Lankes' through the network 'Wohnprojekte e. V.', and learning about opportunities and challenges of building cooperative projects.
For those interested in becoming involved in communal housing projects in Bremen or similar developments, typical routes include contacting local housing cooperatives or community housing organizations in Bremen, monitoring announcements from Bremen’s city planning or housing departments for calls for participants or cooperative membership, and checking platforms like WG-Gesucht for flatshares or communal living opportunities. To get active involvement details specifically for Hulsberg, one would likely need to consult Bremen city’s official housing or urban development offices, or local community associations in Hulsberg.

Engaging in this development, the "Frida" building cooperative plans to allocate a portion of their funds towards financing the construction of their eco-friendly residence, aligning with their values of sustainability and solidarity. With the potential for 160 housing units to be developed through communal building and living in Bremen, investing in communal housing projects could prove beneficial for both the cooperatives and the city's expanding housing landscape.
With the arrival of the "Frida" building cooperative in the Hulsberg Quarter, the area is set to transform, not only through real-estate development but also by fostering a sense of community and shared living, reflecting Senator for Urban Development Özlem Ünsal's encouragement for Bremers to diversify the city's housing construction through cooperative projects.
