In the heart of Bavaria, the city of Landshut is set to welcome a new bridge over the Kleine Isar. This much-anticipated project, worth approximately 3.3 million euros, is a significant step towards improving traffic safety and enhancing the city's appeal for pedestrians and cyclists.

The financing for this project comes from the Special Program for Town and Country, with the federal government contributing 2.142 million euros. This funding, while not explicitly cited as coming directly from the federal government for this specific project, is part of the broader context of infrastructure projects. There are ongoing discussions regarding the financing responsibilities between Bavaria and the federal government for certain infrastructure projects in the region.

Mayor Alexander Putz has emphasised the importance of these changes, highlighting the benefits that the new bridge will bring to the city. One of the key features of the new bridge is its innovative design, which includes only one bridge pillar. This design reduces the risk of debris getting stuck, a common occurrence in the Isar during high water.

The new bridge will also carry a district heating line of the Landshut city works across the Kleine Isar. This adaptation is an important step towards ensuring the city's energy needs are met sustainably.

Another significant aspect of the new bridge is the separation of pedestrian and cyclist paths. This separation aims to increase traffic safety and make the bridge more attractive for both groups. The clear width between the banks of the new bridge will be increased to 5.75 meters to accommodate this change.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new bridge was attended by CSU federal MP Florian Oßner, state MPs Jutta Widmann (FW) and Ruth Müller (SPD), Government President Rainer Haselbeck, and the Bavarian Minister for Housing, Building and Transport, Christian Bernreiter (CSU). Minister Bernreiter stated that the new bridge is a significant cycle path construction project for the city of Landshut.

The next steps involve the construction company creating the formwork and reinforcement for the foundations, which will then be concreted. The boreholes for the deep foundation have already been set, and a filled-in construction road is used to build the bridge pillar in the middle of the river.

Sadly, the aging bridge over the Kleine Isar will be replaced in the coming months. However, its demolition paves the way for a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable bridge that aligns with Bavaria's commitment to cycling as a central component of its mobility and climate policy.

As the construction progresses, Landshut residents and visitors can look forward to a new bridge that will not only improve their daily commute but also contribute to the city's overall appeal and sustainability.
