Business Mogul Brian Acheson Expands into Elite Flat Racing
In an unexpected move, renowned National Hunt owner Brian Acheson has ventured into the high-end Flat bloodstock industry by acquiring a minority stake in Ecurie des Monceaux, a prestigious French breeding operation specializing in blue-chip Flat bloodstock.
Ecurie des Monceaux, known for its elite broodmare band of around 70 mares and champions such as Paddington and Sottsass, is now partnering with Acheson's business acumen and resources. As CEO of Dornan Engineering Ltd, a major advanced technology company with multinational clients and a turnover of €734 million in 2024, Acheson brings a dynamic entrepreneurial spirit to the partnership.
Henri Bozo, director at Monceaux, emphasized the importance of the collaboration by stating that Acheson's addition will strengthen their team with a successful entrepreneur. This partnership is expected to foster new international breeding opportunities and successful "nicks" between European and Japanese bloodstock, broadening Monceaux’s breeding horizons.
The partnership between Acheson's racing enterprise, Robcour, and Ecurie des Monceaux has been a significant move in the high-end Flat bloodstock industry. Robcour, a regular fixture on racecourses in Britain and Ireland, has noteworthy successes this year at the Cheltenham Festival with Bob Olinger and Air Of Entitlement. Notable top-level scorers under the Robcour colours include Gerri Colombe, Irish Point, Hiddenvalley Lake, and Slade Steel.
Monceaux, the highest grossing vendor at France's flagship yearling sale in Deauville for the last 13 years, has also enjoyed success as an owner. They secured a Group 1 winner, Ramatuelle, who was picked up as a yearling for €100,000 and resold to Coolmore for $5.1m at Fasig-Tipton last November.
At the latest Arqana August Sale, Ecurie des Monceaux sold 32 yearlings for receipts totalling €12.955m. Bozo stated that Monceaux is aiming to repeat this success with new acquisitions at this year's sales, focusing on yearling fillies as the best chance to secure high-end broodmares. Bozo also mentioned that it has become difficult to get hands on a new mare with a nice physical, pedigree, and performances, and that yearling fillies are a good opportunity for Monceaux.
The filly, named Diamond Necklace, is registered as in training with Aidan O'Brien. Dornan Engineering Ltd, a company led by Acheson, is a market leader in the advanced technology sector with over 1,000 employees. This partnership represents a fusion of entrepreneurial dynamism and premier bloodstock expertise, potentially influencing both European and international high-end Thoroughbred Flat breeding markets.
