Puerto Rico's Solar Boom: Solx Opens First Module Plant
Puerto Rico is set to become a major player in solar module production. Solx, a U.S. company, is about to commence operations at its first solar module manufacturing facility on the island. The plant will produce high-efficiency modules for the utility-scale market.
The facility, which has received a significant subsidy from Puerto Rican governor Jenniffer González-Colón, will churn out 72-cell N-type modules. It boasts the largest laminators in North America, ensuring high throughput. Solx plans to expand its reach, aiming for 10 GW of manufacturing capacity across the U.S. mainland by 2030.
The company expects to employ over 200 people in permanent positions as production ramps up. Puerto Rico's skilled workforce and ability to attract top talent were key factors in Solx's decision to locate the facility there. The plant is expected to produce between 700 MW to 800 MW of solar modules annually, with a total investment of $64 million.
Solx is partnering with Origami Solar to source steel frames for the modules, including a large-format G12 module. Major assembly-line equipment has been installed, calibrated, and tested, with commercial operation slated for the end of the year.
Solx's new facility in Puerto Rico is set to boost the island's solar industry and create jobs. With a focus on high-efficiency modules and a strategic partnership with Origami Solar, Solx is poised to make a significant impact on the utility-scale solar market.
