Ghana continues to captivate foreign investors, according to Wesley Kirton, the Executive Director of World Trade Center Georgetown, Guyana, a subsidiary of the prominent Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL). Though Ghana has been grappling with recent economic turbulence, Kirton believes the nation remains robust and alluring to investors.
During a conversation in Accra for the 53 General Assembly of the World Trade Centres Association, Kirton expressed enthusiasm about the significant interest in Ghana's markets, particularly in the sectors of energy, light-manufacturing, shea butter processing, and real estate.
"Ghana's inventory is bustling with promise," Kirton shared, citing interactions with investors from various countries. "The environment here seems very stable and well-arranged, which I believe bodes well for the future."
Kirton also underscored the cordial and inviting nature of Ghanaians as a significant factor attracting investors. "My fondest memory is the warm hospitality I've experienced here. The people I've met - and I bet those I haven't - are incredibly friendly and hospitable. Such connections foster favorable business relations."
Interestingly, Kirton observed similarities between the cultures of Ghana and the Caribbean, which he believes augurs well for prospective collaborations.
DDL recently partnered with the indigenous Ghanaian firm, Pan Africa B2B Marketplace, to offer their premium rums and cocktail mixers in the Ghanaian market and West Africa at large. Revealing more about the collaboration, Beau PK Sackey, a representative of Pan Africa B2B Marketplace, stated, "Thanks to DDL, we have been offered competitive pricing. We've already performed market analyses, and we're poised to offer better prices while maintaining the same unparalleled taste of the El Dorado rum series and the legendary Diamond Reserve cocktail mixers."
Sackey explained that the rising interest among Americans and Caribbean nationals in Ghana's tourism opportunities presents an attractive market for Demerara Distillers' products. "We foresee more tourists flowing into Ghana as governments forge stronger ties. As more visitors explore the continent, the demand for high-quality food and beverages increases. With Pan Africa B2B Marketplace, we're well-prepared to cater to this need in Ghana and beyond."
The collaboration between Demerara Distillers and Pan Africa B2B Marketplace was hailed by Wesley Kirton as "a step in the right direction." He also emphasized the importance of bolstering trade relations between Ghana and the Caribbean for food security purposes: "In the face of future pandemics or emergencies, it's crucial for countries like Ghana and Guyana to band together to ensure a stable supply chain for essential commodities."
Lastly, Kirton expressed confidence in the potential of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to attract investment from Caribbean nations, making Ghana the gateway for African business opportunities: "I believe there's untapped potential in AfCFTA, and I strongly encourage more Caribbean countries to explore this trade arrangement. Establishing a Caribbean Embassy in Ghana, staffed with experts capable of navigating the intricacies of the African market, would be an essential first step."
