Railway construction on the Halle/Leipzig-Berlin route scheduled from 24 September to 13 December 2025
The construction work on the Anhalter Bahn Halle/Leipzig - Berlin route, scheduled from September 24 to December 13, 2025, will result in significant changes for both long-distance and local train services.
DB InfraGO, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn responsible for infrastructure, will be carrying out maintenance and upgrades during this period, including renewing the electronic interlocking system and managing extensive rail replacement services. The aim is to minimize disruption for travelers.
For long-distance trains, the service between Frankfurt and Berlin via Kassel is expected to remain unaffected. However, the two-hour direct connections between Frankfurt and Berlin via Halle (Saale) will be suspended during the construction period. This means that travelers will have to endure travel time increases of between 45 and 60 minutes between Halle (Saale) and Leipzig, and Berlin due to the detours.
The construction will also result in a complete closure of the route, causing detours for long-distance trains, affecting services between Halle (Saale) and Leipzig, and Berlin. During this closure, long-distance trains will not serve stops at Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Berlin Südkreuz. Moreover, only a two-hourly service to Erfurt/Nuremberg/Munich will be available.
Between Berlin and Munich, there will be at least one long-distance train per hour during the construction.
The Bitterfeld node will be closed from October 10 to October 13, causing long-distance trains to be extensively rerouted, and stops in Bitterfeld to be suspended. During the closure of the Bitterfeld node, a replacement service between Wolfen/Bitterfeld and Leipzig Messe/Halle (Saale) will be established for local traffic.
Local trains will also be affected, with an hourly replacement service for the S-Bahn line S8 Halle (Saale) - Lutherstadt Wittenberg established between Bitterfeld and Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The construction is expected to cause detours for local trains, similar to the long-distance trains.
Travelers are advised to check the timetable data for the changed connections in the information media to plan their journeys accordingly.
