Railway expansion in Bengaluru: Survey for fourth significant rail station approved, according to reports.
Title: Bengaluru's Overburdened Railway System to Get a Breather with a Mega Terminal
Quick Bites: Bengaluru, a city with over 11.5 million inhabitants, currently operates with just three terminals. To ease this congestion, the Railway Board has given the green light to a detailed survey for a new mega terminal with maintenance facilities near Devanahalli.
The ambitious project, estimated to cost over ₹1.3 crore for the survey stage alone, aims to determine the optimal location either around the existing Devanahalli station or along the Yelahanka-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur corridor. This upcoming terminal will function as Bengaluru's fourth major rail hub and will help distribute the traffic load more evenly across the network.

As it stands, the city's three terminals - KSR Bengaluru, Yeshwantpur, and Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Baiyappanahalli - are running at full capacity. Daily, they handle 140 originating, 139 terminating, and 142 passing-through trains, as well as 110 trains undergoing primary maintenance. In the 2024-25 fiscal year alone, Bangalore recorded nearly 104 million originating passengers, with a total rail footfall of 212 million, signifying high usage levels and resultant strain (Times of India further reported).
Officials stress that this strain has led to significant congestion, delays, and overcrowding at platforms. With projections estimating 210 originating trains per day in the near future, the need for infrastructure expansion has become critical.
Positioned on the outskirts of the city and near the Kempegowda International Airport, Devanahalli offers an ideal location for the proposed terminal. The new facility will comprise pit lines and maintenance facilities to improve operational turnaround and share the load from the core city terminals.
