Raspberry Pi Announces Price Changes Due to AI-Driven Memory Demand
Raspberry Pi has announced significant price changes for several of its products, primarily due to increased demand for high-bandwidth memory driven by the AI boom. While some products remain unaffected, others have seen substantial price increases.
Memory costs have surged by approximately 120% compared to last year, leading Raspberry Pi to adjust its pricing. The Raspberry Pi 3B+ will now cost $40, a $5 increase. However, the 1 GB and 2 GB variants are unaffected by these changes.
The Compute Module 1 has seen a reduction in price, now costing $25 after a $5 decrease. Conversely, the Raspberry Pi 500 has risen by $10 to $100, and the Raspberry Pi Development Kit for Compute Module 5 has increased by $5 to $135.
Raspberry Pi has sufficient supplies of lower-density memory chips to last until 2026, but the company is raising costs for special memory chips used in its production due to increased demand. The 4 GB Compute Module 4 and Compute Module 5 have both increased by $5, to $50 and $60 respectively. The 8 GB variants of these modules have also risen by 12%, to $95 and $105 respectively. Notably, this reverses a previous reduction made in May for the Compute Module 4.
Raspberry Pi's price adjustments reflect the global trend of increasing memory costs, particularly for high-bandwidth memory used in AI applications. While some products remain stable, consumers should expect to pay more for certain Raspberry Pi devices moving forward.
