Raspberry Pi Foundation Announces Price Increases Due to Rising RAM Costs
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced price increases for several of its popular products due to rising production costs. The increases, ranging from $5 to $10, are expected to affect various models, including the Compute Module 4 and 5, as well as the Raspberry Pi 500 and Development Kit for Compute Module 5. The 4- and 8-GB versions of these products will be initially impacted.
The price hike comes as memory manufacturers, such as SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron, phase out older LPDDR4 and DDR4 memory generations to focus on High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI accelerators. This shift in production has led to a more than doubling of LPDDR4 RAM module prices since 2024. However, products with 1 and 2 GB of memory are not directly affected as RAM constitutes a smaller portion of their total costs.
Currently, the 16 GB Raspberry Pi 5 model in Germany costs around €160 to €163. While the Raspberry Pi 4 does not have a common 16 GB variant, future price changes for this model may be influenced by the rising RAM prices. The Raspberry Pi Foundation's CEO, Eben Upton, attributes the price increases to the AI hype, which has led memory manufacturers to prioritize HBM production.
The price increases will initially impact the 4- and 8-GB versions of the affected Raspberry Pi products. While it remains uncertain whether the standard single-board computers Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 will face supply issues in the future, the shift in memory production is expected to continue influencing prices.
