The Hanseatic City of Lübeck is preparing for significant changes in its public transportation system, as the Mühlentor Bridge will be closed to bus traffic starting December 14, 2025. This closure is due to the bridge's structural condition, a decision made in collaboration with Lübeck Stadtwerke Mobil and the transport authority.

The Mühlentor Bridge is a vital traffic hub in Lübeck, serving as a crossroads for numerous bus lines that connect the city center, Kronsforder Allee, Mönkhofer Weg, Ratzeburger Allee, and other key areas. Lines 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 15, 16, and 17 will be affected by the closure, with some lines being split or following new detours.

Line 4, for instance, will be divided, with the section between Gustav-Radbruch-Platz and Heiweg operating as a new line 41. The most affected area will be Wahmstraße, which will see an increase in traffic with up to 71 buses per hour.

To ensure the most important connections and reliable bus traffic, the planned detours have been carefully designed. Buses will follow detours via Wallstraße, Possehlstraße, St.-Jürgen-Ring, Hüxtertorallee, Rehderbrücke, Krähenstraße, and Wahmstraße to reach the city center.

Line 7 will take a different route, moving via Mühlenstraße - Wallstraße - Possehlstraße to Genin. Other lines will use the detour via Wahmstraße, Rehder Bridge, and Huxtertorallee.

Senator for Urban Development Joanna Hagen emphasises that these measures are essential for securing the city's bus connections. Passengers may have to transfer at points such as the Sana clinics or Gustav-Radbruch-Platz due to the changes, but sufficient time will be provided for the public to adapt to the new arrangements.

The new bus timetables will be published in early November, 2025, giving commuters ample time to familiarise themselves with the new schedules. The closure applies only to vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons, allowing cars, vans, and smaller campers to continue using the bridge.

The Hanseatic City of Lübeck, Lübeck Stadtwerke Mobil, and the transport authority ask for the public's understanding and cooperation during this period of necessary changes.
