Speeding Epidemic in Tomsk Region: Record-Breaking Speeds and Fatal Consequences
In the Tomsk region of Russia, a concerning trend of serious traffic accidents has been on the rise. According to recent reports, these incidents have been attributed to speeding and unsafe driving practices.
On July 30th, Alexander Zolotarev, the head of the GIBDD department in Tomsk region, shared speeding statistics for the first six months of 2025 during a press conference. The data revealed a disturbing pattern, with drivers consistently exceeding speed limits on major roads.
One such instance occurred on Prospekt Komsomol'skii, where a Hyundai driver was caught on video surveillance system going an alarming 166 km/h, more than four times the 40 km/h speed limit. The same federal road R-255 "Siberia" approaching Tomsk has seen its fair share of extreme speeding as well. A Toyota Land Cruiser hit 188 km/h, a Lexus driver reached 188 km/h, and a Porsche even reached 190 km/h, all exceeding the 90 km/h speed limit.
A particularly alarming record-breaking speed was recorded on the 27th kilometer of the Tomsk-Kargala-Kolpashevo road. A BMW driver reached an astounding 217 km/h, where the speed limit is a more modest 90 km/h.
These incidents have resulted in severe consequences, as illustrated by a recent accident where one person was killed and four others injured.
While specific details on penalties and regulations for extreme speeding in the Tomsk region in 2025 are not reported, Russian federal traffic regulations typically impose fines, license suspensions, and even criminal liability for extreme speeding, especially on highways and urban roads.
Zolotarev also highlighted the issue of insufficient parking spaces in Tomsk as a contributing factor to traffic accidents. He named the lack of road markings as one of the main causes of accidents, emphasizing the importance of clear and visible road markings for safe driving.
In an effort to improve road safety, Zolotarev shared plans to regulate electric scooter rentals in the region. These measures are aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving the overall safety of the roads in Tomsk.
As the region grapples with these issues, it is clear that strict enforcement of traffic laws and continued efforts to improve road safety infrastructure will be crucial in reducing the number of traffic accidents and saving lives on the roads of Tomsk.
In the realm of industry, the automotive sector is deeply impacted by the current speeding epidemic in Tomsk region, as the reckless driving practices leading to numerous accidents increase insurance claims and potential vehicle damages.
On the financial side, the surge in traffic accidents with record-breaking speeds in Tomsk may lead to increased expenditures in the transportation industry, due to the extensive repairs of the damaged roads and infrastructure caused by these accidents.
